Community Background
The communities of Marten Falls First Nation and Webequie First Nation are remote Indigenous communities in northwestern Ontario and are not currently accessible by all-season roads.
Marten Falls First Nation is an Anishinabe First Nation community in northern Ontario, located at the junction of the Albany and Ogoki Rivers, approximately 430 km northeast of Thunder Bay, with an estimated on-reserve population of 325.
Webequie First Nation is an Ojibway community located on the northern peninsula of Eastwood Island on Winisk Lake, located approximately 525 km north of Thunder Bay, with a total on-reserve population of 923 people.
Access by winter roads is becoming more limited due to climate change; travel by airplane is expensive and limits socio-economic development.
